Sensitive Issues

Researcher studying stem cells

There are many controversial issues that face us everyday. Two of them are abortion and stem-cell research. While I do not believe in abortion myself, I do believe it is up to a woman to decide. However, this decision should not be made lightly. It should be talked over with a doctor and any other persons that are involved. Therefore, while I believe abortion should be legal, the decision should be made with diligence and not as a form of birth control.

Stem-cell research is a great idea. We can save many lives if breakthroughs are done. However, I don't believe in embryonic stem-cell research unless we know for sure that the embryos cannot sustain life. To continue the vast research into cures for Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, and Diabetes we can continue to use adult stem-cells. We can even use pig embryos, as their cells closely resemble ours and the DNA is almost the same. I am not saying Wisconsin should lose their #1 place in stem-cell research, but we should be doing it responsibly. Imagine how amazing it would be if someone didn't have to live with any of these imperfections.

In 2008, the University of Minnesota grew a little mouse heart out of blank stem-cells. The heart was a major advancement into growing full organs for transplants, not to mention the heart actually beat. As governor, I will ensure that the University of Wisconsin system has the capabilities to perform the same types of advancements.
